Conditional commerce glossary

The language behind actionable demand.

Precise definitions help merchants distinguish interest, evidence, commitments, attributed outcomes, and measured lift.

Conditional purchase

A shopper's explicit statement of what must become true before they buy, attached to enough context for a merchant to evaluate and respond.

Reverse checkout

A memorable description of the workflow: demand starts with the shopper's condition, the merchant reviews it, and approved terms return to a normal Shopify checkout.

Live Order Book

The merchant-facing queue of conditional purchase requests, decisions, ownership, deadlines, evidence, and potential value.

Potential demand

A submitted request that has not yet met qualification requirements. It is not an order or a revenue forecast.

Qualified demand

A request with enough valid context and evidence to enter a merchant decision workflow.

Authenticated demand

A request tied to a stronger verified customer identity or authenticated customer context.

Clearable demand

Qualified demand whose current operational and commercial evidence indicates that the requested condition may be fulfilled.

Commitment

How strongly the shopper has expressed purchase intent, tracked independently from the system's confidence in conversion.

Confidence

The strength and calibration of evidence supporting an outcome estimate; it is separate from shopper commitment.

Private offer

An expiring, revocable set of exact merchant-approved terms bound to the intended shopper, product, quantity, and currency.

Revalidation

A fresh check of product, price, inventory, identity, market, quantity, expiry, and policy evidence immediately before checkout opens.

Hard rule

A requirement that blocks an action when it fails or its required evidence is unknown, such as a margin floor or inventory constraint.

Soft recommendation

An explainable suggestion that helps prioritize or counter a request but does not create a customer-facing promise.

Demand cluster

A group of requests compatible on the dimensions needed for a specific action, while each shopper's request and consent remain distinct.

Attribution

A traceable relationship between a request workflow and an observed paid order under documented rules and a defined window.

Incrementality

An estimate of what the intervention caused beyond what would have happened without it, usually requiring a credible holdout or comparison.

Net generated sales

Attributed paid sales after append-only refund and cancellation corrections under the documented billing definition.

Holdout

An eligible group that does not receive the tested intervention, assigned before exposure to support responsible lift analysis.

Transactional consent

Permission or necessity to send updates directly related to the shopper's specific request and service lifecycle.

Marketing consent

A separate, optional, revocable choice to receive promotional messages beyond the specific request lifecycle.
